It would say hand light wouldn't it? I am not certain this is the correct manual as my boiler does not have a letter anywhere I can see. There is also a sticker on the boiler listing procedure to start and it does not say hand light. Pilot should auto light as per hydrotherm manual (HC-D and HC-E manuals). Hydrotherm boiler circa 1970 model HC-145.

I don't think that's a homeowner modification. Whoever did it did a reasonably good job. Maybe that part stopped working properly so they just bypassed it. I think it's also possible that there may be a problem with the aquastat. Perhaps the person that modified that wiring thought that the burner was big enough to heat the DHW AND the home at the same time.
